Hmmm, I know if I walked by a book title that said something about being too young to write a memoire in the title, it would pique my interest for sure! It’s definitely felt like a challenge and in a title, I’d say it speaks to the author meeting that challenge! I’d open that book and look through it! Dedicate it to the naysayers thanking them for being your driving force! Just reading your post has me looking for my naysayers to allow them to push me forward right over top of my inner critic. Thank them and pick up speed! 😁
We got told we were "too young to be snowbirds" when we explained why we were in the Southwest for the winter. I wasn't aware there were age restrictions on that. You're never too young to do what you're heart is telling you needs to be done.
I never cease to be amazed at the age restrictions people have in their minds! Never heard this one about snowbirds. Agree that we're never "too young" or "too old" for anything.
Tell that inner critic where to go! I agree with your point about memoir having no bearing on age or background. A good story speaks for itself. Good luck with the writing, Jeannie!
I really appreciated so much about what you expressed here. Thank you for listening to your heart and bringing that inner and outer critic to my attention today. You are so correct about that inner critic. I'm glad you keep writing and look the other way. That was totally relatable in my life and a reminder to listen to the Divine guide within instead. It is my understanding as well that most people do not understand the difference between memoir and autobiography. Memoir is a form of writing that tells a personal story. It can be written at any time through a person's life, in small essays to a larger work and can include a reflective stance. Most think of an autobiography when they hear memoir which comprises of more historical data and some reflective writing, but done in a whole work. Most autobiographies I've read have been written in the latter years of one's life. Memoir is written at any moment. At least that's how I see it.
Michele, what a fantastic distinction you make here between memoir and autobiography, and you are 100% accurate in how you describe the two. It's helpful for me to be reminded that the reason some may have said "You're too young to write a memoir" is that they might have been genuinely confused about what a memoir actually is. Thank you for that!

Great encouragement! Thank you so much.

Jeannie, yes! I am continuously stopping myself from doing that!

Thanks, Julie. Same to you. I always find your essays to be very insightful and informative.
